Washington DC — The Saudi government executed a Saudi national on charges including spying for Qatar, according to an official statement and sources familiar with the case.

Mohamed Abdullah AlRashid was executed Monday in a Qaseem prison, north of the capital Riyadh on charges of spying for unnamed external entity, spying for a terrorist organization, and for owning arms and munitions.

While the Saudi official statement did not name Qatar it referred to it as “an external entity, threatening the security of the kingdom.” Saudi Arabia led a four-state blockade against Qatar in June 2017 that included a plan to invade the country and topple the government. The late Kuwaiti ruler Sabah AlSabah alluded to the invasion during his visit to the White House in September 2017.

According to sources familiar with the case AlRashid worked at the Saudi Royal Court from which he allegedly shared “sensitive information” with Qatari government and what the Saudis called a terror organization without naming it. This may refer to the Muslim Brotherhood movement or activists, who the Saudi government designates as terrorists.

The execution is surprising given the fact that Saudi strongman and de facto ruler Mohamed bin Salman meets Qatari ruler Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani meet privately on a monthly basis, according to IGA sources.

AlRashid’s family members declined to provide information or photos of AlRashid due extreme fear from the Saudi government and its oppressive tactics.
