July 11th, 2008 – Spain’s most widely circulated newspaper, El País (The Country), gave full page coverage yesterday to the issue of sexual discrimination in the International Olympic Games, which the Institute for Gulf Affairs had previously covered in extensive detail. El País quoted IGA Director Ali Al-Ahmed as saying that while China’s harsh treatment of Tibet has sparked global protests, far less attention has been accorded to the restrictions placed on female athletes.

“The IOC should do more to eliminate the discriminatory practices of its members, which violate the Olympic charter itself”, said Mr. Al-Ahmed, co-author of the Report, “Crossing the Finish Line”. The full article in El País can be found here.
